Sailing on lake Garda
Sailing on lake Garda is a tradition that gave birth to thebest skippers in the world. Discover the wind.
The northern area of Lake Garda, which is geographically part of Trentino, gets constant wind, making it ideal for sailing and windsurfing on the waters of the lake basin, and Riva del Garda is the place where sailing reigns as the undisputed queen.
In the last fifty years, the waters of Benaco (another name for Lake Garda) have been the training ground for some of the best skippers in all Olympic classes, a true sailing paradise.
The presence of the Pelér, Ora and Vinessa winds, which are in the northern zone of Benaco, turn the tranquil waters of the lake, glacial in origin, into ones similar to what one usually find in the sea. Perfect for a sport that requires winds of a certain intensity and rippling waves.
And thus also perfect for those holidaying on Lake Garda to try out sailing. The mirror of water before Riva del Garda and the other Trentino towns is dotted with dozens of colourful sails at any time of day, and there is a wealth of sailing schools welcoming beginners, both adults and children.
There are numerous sailing clubs, all recognised by the Federation, and countless competitions of every class held on these waters, including the Centomiglia and the Intervela, which boast half a century of history.
This corner of Trentino is also home to Progetto Homerus, a programme that makes it possible for even the blind to enjoy sailing.
